For those cases where the correction of refractive errors with laser is not indicated, there are other alternative techniques; These are: refractive surgery with phakic lens implantation and refractive lensectomy with intraocular lens implantation.
PHAKIC LENS IMPLANT - EYE SURGERY
The implantation of a phakic lens (usually posterior chamber, type ICL®), appears as an alternative to the excimer laser, for those patients - in non-presbyopic age - who, due to their eye characteristics, are unsuitable for laser eye surgery. It consists of introducing, in the anterior pole of the eye, a lens made of synthetic material, specially designed to correct the refractive error.
The intervention, performed by our ophthalmologist surgeons, requires a three day preparation with eye drops prior to the treatment. Normally, topic anaesthesia is administered (drops). The phakic lens is introduced, special and unique for each patient, in a simple intervention which takes just a few minutes, and that does not require stitches or occlusion (the patient can go home without having to cover the eye).
The personalised follow-up, carried out by the medical team of the clinic, will allow to control the patient´s evolution. Continuous postoperative check-ups will be seen through the following approximate time frames:
After 24 hours.
After a week.
After a month.
After three months and frequently until discharge.
Eye Clinic Dr. Tirado has a long background in this type of phakic lens implant, more than a decade, and a great amount of patients have undergone surgery.
REFRACTIVE LENSECTOMY SURGERY AND INTRAOCULAR EYE IMPLANT
Refractive lensectomy is another technique used to correct refractive errors, an alternative to excimer laser.
Mainly indicated for presbyopic patients (and even younger or pre-presbyopic patients, in specific cases) who are unsuitable for laser eye surgery.
It consists of disintegrating and removing the lens from the inside of the eyeball, by ultrasound (phacoemulsification). Once this is done, it is replaced by an artificial lens (compatible material, acrylic or other similar materials).
