A retina specialist is a specialized ophthalmological doctor with medical-surgical training and a specific dedication to this subspecialty. Although is not officially recognized in Spain yet, it has been a reality for years in the best ophthalmological centers. The Spanish Society of Retina and Vitreous, which our specialists belong to, has been working for this reality to acquire regulation and legal base, as well as to facilitate instructing the younger.

A retina specialist commonly treats diseases such as macular holes, epiretinal membranes, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and macular edema, vitreous hemorrhages, prevention and treatment of retinal detachments, vascular occlusions of the retina, uveitis, vasculitis, and ocular tumors.
We have the most modern diagnostic equipment that consist of conventional digital angiography to pan retinal cameras like the optomap, that obtains a panoramic view of the retina enabling detection and exploration with and without contrasts of the peripheral retina, whose importance is more and more evident in numerous retinal pathologies.

Autofluorescence is another imaging method we perform regularly. It is characterized by its non-invasive nature and the relevant clinical information it provides. It is a very important tool that allows us to offer you more accurate diagnoses and more appropriate treatments.

Another diagnostic tool that we offer, and which is already consolidated in modern ophthalmology, is the optical coherence tomography. Years ago we became innovators in our field by providing our patients with an OCT Stratus from Zeiss, the reference equipment at that time. Nevertheless, in 2008 we acquired an OCT Cirrus, also from Zeiss, the most advanced technological evolution of high definition spectral tomography, which still today is at the highest technological level thanks to the updates that have been incorporated.
At the therapeutic level, we combine the best human surgical team and the most advanced Alcon technological equipment, all in facilities we offer in our own clinic. It is a specialized operating room, thought and designed by and for ophthalmologists whose main purpose is to be able to perform top quality eye surgery. It is no coincidence that we can offer you the best surgical results.

It is in this excellent surgical environment where we perform the different intravitreal treatments that deal with many of the retinal pathologies: Lucentis, Avastin, intravitreal implants of dexamethasone, and triamcinolone (this last one is being used less). With this we ensure that the infectious complications inherent in these procedures are minimized as much as possible, which in our experience are fortunately very rare. We have a modern Argon laser that allows us to perform treatments for multiple retinal pathologies with the highest quality and best results.

Another therapeutic option whose indication today is limited to few carefully chosen cases, but which we also make available to our patients, is photodynamic therapy with Verteporfin. There is proven scientific evidence that shows it a very good option for chronic central serous chorioretinopathy treatment.
